Big ideas, wider audience.

Ecademi takes academic ideas beyond the university and into the public sphere. Through national tours with leading academics, online events, and live discussions, we create space for complex topics to be explored in ways that are accessible, relevant, and thought-provoking. The goal: to spark conversation, challenge assumptions, and bring critical thinking into the mainstream.

Taking Lives: What Perpetrators' Narratives Reveal About Violence with Dr Martín Hernán Di Marco

Femicide - the killing of women because they are women - is one of the most extreme forms of gender-based violence. Yet we still know surprisingly little about what goes on in the minds and lives of the men who commit it.

This Ecademi online seminar brings together the key insights from Taking Lives, the new and first-of-its-kind study by Dr. Martín Hernán Di Marco. His research involved in-depth, repeated interviews with men convicted of killing their partners across eight countries in Latin America. The result is a rare and unsettling look into how these men understand their actions.

Through in-depth interviews with relatives of British citizens killed overseas, the study offers a rare insight into how co-victims navigate the post-homicide landscape and the narratives they construct to make sense of their bereavement. The findings highlight the unique pressures generated by cross-border investigations, cultural and linguistic differences, and the practical demands placed on families at a time of profound vulnerability.
